Connect to Your Linux VPS via SSH

Once your Linux VPS is active, you can log in over SSH with full root access. You'll need three things from your welcome email:

  • Server IP address (for example, 203.0.113.10)
  • Username: always root
  • Password

Connecting from macOS or Linux

SSH is built in, so there's nothing to install.

  1. Open the Terminal app.
  2. Run the following command, replacing YOUR_IP with your server's IP address:
    ssh root@YOUR_IP
  3. The first time you connect, you'll see a warning about the host's authenticity. Type yes and press Enter.
  4. Paste your root password and press Enter. Nothing appears on screen while you type the password; that's a normal Linux security feature.

Connecting from Windows

On Windows 10 or 11 you can use Command Prompt or PowerShell with the same ssh root@YOUR_IP command. Alternatively, use PuTTY:

  1. Download and install PuTTY.
  2. Enter your server's IP address in the "Host Name (or IP address)" box and make sure the port is 22.
  3. Click Open. If a security alert appears, click Accept.
  4. At the login as: prompt, type root and press Enter, then paste your password (right-click pastes in PuTTY) and press Enter.

Locked out? If you lose SSH access or misconfigure your firewall, use the VNC Console in your server control panel to log in directly.
